    [niv] When Jacob saw them, he said, "This is the camp of God!" So he named that place Mahanaim.
    [asv] And Jacob said when he saw them, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

    [niv] Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
    [asv] And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the field of Edom.
    [jnd] And Jacob sent messengers before his face to Esau his brother, into the land of Seir, the fields of Edom.

    [niv] He instructed them: "This is what you are to say to my master Esau: `Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now.
    [asv] And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye say unto my lord Esau: Thus saith thy servant Jacob, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now:
    [jnd] And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak to my lord, to Esau: Thy servant Jacob speaks thus -- With Laban have I sojourned and tarried until now;
    [kjv] And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
    [nwb] And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak to my lord Esau: Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there till now:
    [rsv] instructing them, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, 'I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now;
    [web] He commanded them, saying, "This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: 'This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now.
    [ylt] and commandeth them, saying, `Thus do ye say to my lord, to Esau: Thus said thy servant Jacob, With Laban I have sojourned, and I tarry until now;
    [bbe] And he gave them orders to say these words to Esau: Your servant Jacob says, Till now I have been living with Laban:
32:5 [cbgb] 我有牛,驴,羊群,仆婢,现在打发人来报告我主,为要在你眼前蒙恩。 < | >
    [niv] I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, menservants and maidservants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.'"
    [asv] and I have oxen, and asses, and flocks, and men-servants, and maid-servants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in thy sight.
    [jnd] and I have oxen, and asses, sheep, and bondmen, and bondwomen; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favour in thine eyes.
    [kjv] And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
    [nwb] And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and men-servants, and women-servants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
    [rsv] and I have oxen, asses, flocks, menservants, and maidservants; and I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.'"
    [web] I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, men-servants, and maid-servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.'"
    [ylt] and I have ox, and ass, flock, and man-servant, and maid-servant, and I send to declare to my lord, to find grace in his eyes.'
    [bbe] And I have oxen and asses and flocks and men-servants and women-servants: and I have sent to give my lord news of these things so that I may have grace in his eyes.

    [niv] When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."
    [asv] And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and moreover he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
    [jnd] And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother, to Esau; and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

    [bbe] When the servants came back they said, We have seen your brother Esau and he is coming out to you, and four hundred men with him.
32:7 [cbgb] 雅各就甚惧怕,而且愁烦,便把那与他同在的人口和羊群,牛群,骆驼分作两队, < | >
    [niv] In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well.
    [asv] Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed: and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two companies;
    [jnd] Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and was distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the sheep and the cattle and the camels, into two troops.
    [kjv] Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

32:8 [cbgb] 说,以扫若来击杀这一队,剩下的那一队还可以逃避。 < | >
    [niv] He thought, "If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape."
    [asv] and he said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the company which is left shall escape.
    [jnd] And he said, If Esau come to the one troop and smite it, then the other troop which is left shall escape.
    [kjv] And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
    [nwb] And said, If Esau shall come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left, will escape.
    [rsv] thinking, "If Esau comes to the one company and destroys it, then the company which is left will escape."
    [web] and he said, "If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape."
    [ylt] and saith, `If Esau come in unto the one camp, and have smitten it -- then the camp which is left hath been for an escape.'
    [bbe] And said, If Esau, meeting one group, makes an attack on them, the others will get away safely.
32:9 [cbgb] 雅各说,耶和华我祖亚伯拉罕的 神,我父亲以撒的 神阿,你曾对我说,回你本地本族去,我要厚待你。 < | >
    [niv] Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, `Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,'
    [asv] And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Jehovah, who saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good:
    [jnd] And Jacob said, God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah, who saidst unto me: Return into thy country and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good,
    [kjv] And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
    [nwb] And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who saidst to me, Return to thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee;
    [rsv] And Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD who didst say to me, 'Return to your country and to your kindred, and I will do you good,'
    [web] Jacob said, "God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me, 'Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good.'
    [ylt] And Jacob saith, `God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah who saith unto me, Turn back to thy land, and to thy kindred, and I do good with thee:
    [bbe] Then Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, the God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me, Go back to your country and your family and I will be good to you:
32:10 [cbgb] 你向仆人所施的一切慈爱和诚实,我一点也不配得。我先前只拿着我的杖过这约旦河,如今我却成了两队了。 < | >
    [niv] I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two groups.
    [asv] I am not worthy of the least of all the lovingkindnesses, and of all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two companies.
    [jnd] -- I am too small for all the loving-kindness and all the faithfulness that thou hast shewn unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two troops.
    [kjv] I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
    [nwb] I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shown to thy servant: for with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two bands.
    [rsv] I am not worthy of the least of all the steadfast love and all the faithfulness which thou hast shown to thy servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.

    [bbe] I am less than nothing in comparison with all your mercies and your faith to me your servant; for with only my stick in my hand I went across Jordan, and now I have become two armies.
32:11 [cbgb] 求你救我脱离我哥哥以扫的手。因为我怕他来杀我,连妻子带儿女一同杀了。 < | >
    [niv] Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.
    [asv] Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, the mother with the children.
    [jnd] Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, the mother with the children.
    [kjv] Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

    [bbe] Be my saviour from the hand of Esau, my brother: for my fear is that he will make an attack on me, putting to death mother and child.
32:12 [cbgb] 你曾说,我必定厚待你,使你的后裔如同海边的沙,多得不可胜数。 < | >
    [niv] But you have said, `I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"
    [asv] And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
    [jnd] And thou saidst, I will certainly deal well with thee, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
    [kjv] And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
    [nwb] And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

    [ylt] and Thou -- Thou hast said, I certainly do good with thee, and have set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not numbered because of the multitude.'
    [bbe] And you said, Truly, I will be good to you, and make your seed like the sand of the sea which may not be numbered.

    [niv] He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau:
    [asv] And he lodged there that night, and took of that which he had with him a present for Esau his brother:

    [niv] thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.
    [asv] thirty milch camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten foals.
    [jnd] thirty milch camels with their colts; forty kine, and ten bulls; twenty she-asses, and ten young asses.

    [niv] He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, "Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds."
    [asv] And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
    [jnd] And he delivered into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and he said to his servants, Go on before me, and put a space between drove and drove.

    [niv] He instructed the one in the lead: "When my brother Esau meets you and asks, `To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?'
    [asv] And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
    [jnd] And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meets thee, and asks thee, saying, Whose art thou, and where goest thou, and whose are these before thee?
    [kjv] And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
    [nwb] And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau, my brother, meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose thou? and whither goest thou? and whose these before thee?
    [rsv] He instructed the foremost, "When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you, 'To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these before you?'

    [bbe] And he gave orders to the first, saying, When my brother Esau comes to you and says, Whose servant are you, and where are you going, and whose are these herds?
32:18 [cbgb] 你就说,是你仆人雅各的,是送给我主以扫的礼物。他自己也在我们后边。 < | >
    [niv] then you are to say, `They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.'"
    [asv] then thou shalt say They are thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, he also is behind us.
    [jnd] -- then thou shalt say, Thy servant Jacob's: it is a gift sent to my lord, to Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.
    [kjv] Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
    [nwb] Then thou shalt say, They thy servant Jacob's: it a present sent to my lord Esau: and behold also he behind us.
    [rsv] then you shall say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob; they are a present sent to my lord Esau; and moreover he is behind us.'"

    [niv] He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: "You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.
    [asv] And he commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him;
    [jnd] And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, According to this word shall ye speak to Esau when ye find him.

    [bbe] And he gave the same orders to the second and the third and to all those who were with the herds, saying, This is what you are to say to Esau when you see him;
32:20 [cbgb] 并且你们要说,你仆人雅各在我们后边。因雅各心里说,我藉着在我前头去的礼物解他的恨,然后再见他的面,或者他容纳我。 < | >
    [niv] And be sure to say, `Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.'" For he thought, "I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me."
    [asv] and ye shall say, Moreover, behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.
    [jnd] And, moreover, ye shall say, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will propitiate him with the gift that goes before me, and afterwards I will see his face: perhaps he will accept me.
    [kjv] And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.

    [niv] When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
    [asv] And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him.
    [jnd] And when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the joint of his thigh; and the joint of Jacob's thigh was dislocated as he wrestled with him.
    [kjv] And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

    [ylt] and he seeth that he is not able for him, and he cometh against the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh is disjointed in his wrestling with him;
    [bbe] But when the man saw that he was not able to overcome Jacob, he gave him a blow in the hollow part of his leg, so that his leg was damaged.

    [niv] Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."

    [niv] Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon.
    [asv] Therefore the children of Israel eat not the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew of the hip.
    [jnd] Therefore the children of Israel do not eat of the sinew that is over the joint of the thigh, to this day; because he touched the joint of Jacob's thigh -- the sinew.
    [kjv] Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
    [nwb] Therefore the children of Israel eat not the sinew which shrunk, which upon the hollow of the thigh, to this day; because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrunk.
    [rsv] Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh, because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh on the sinew of the hip.

    [bbe] For this reason the children of Israel, even today, never take that muscle in the hollow of the leg as food, because the hollow of Jacob's leg was touched.
