    [niv] He continued, "I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die."

    [niv] Now Joseph was the governor of the land, the one who sold grain to all its people. So when Joseph's brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

    [niv] As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. "Where do you come from?" he asked. "From the land of Canaan," they replied, "to buy food."
    [asv] And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly with them; and he said unto them. Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

    [bbe] And when Joseph saw his brothers, it was clear to him who they were, but he made himself strange to them, and talking roughly to them, said, Where do you come from? And they said, From the land of Canaan, to get food.

    [niv] Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

    [niv] Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, "You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected."
    [asv] And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
    [jnd] And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamt of them; and he said to them, Ye are spies: to see the exposed places of the land ye are come.
    [kjv] And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

    [bbe] Then the memory of his dreams about them came back to Joseph, and he said to them, You have come secretly to see how poor the land is.
42:10 [cbgb] 他们对他说,我主阿,不是的。仆人们是籴粮来的。 < | >
    [niv] "No, my lord," they answered. "Your servants have come to buy food.
    [asv] And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.
    [jnd] And they said to him, No, my lord; but to buy food are thy servants come.
    [kjv] And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.
    [nwb] And they said to him, No, my lord, but to buy food have thy servants come.

    [niv] We are all the sons of one man. Your servants are honest men, not spies."
    [asv] We are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.

    [niv] But they replied, "Your servants were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more."
    [asv] And they said, We thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.
    [jnd] And they said, Thy servants were twelve brethren, sons of one man, in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

    [niv] Joseph said to them, "It is just as I told you: You are spies!
    [asv] And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:
    [jnd] And Joseph said to them, That is it that I have spoken to you, saying, Ye are spies.
    [kjv] And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:
    [nwb] And Joseph said to them, That what I spoke to you, saying, Ye spies:
    [rsv] But Joseph said to them, "It is as I said to you, you are spies.
    [web] . Joseph said to them, "It is like I told you, saying, 'You are spies.'
    [ylt] And Joseph saith unto them, `This that which I have spoken unto you, saying, Ye spies,
    [bbe] And Joseph said, It is as I said; you have come with some secret purpose;
42:15 [cbgb] 我指着法老的性命起誓,若是你们的小兄弟不到这里来,你们就不得出这地方,从此就可以把你们证验出来了。 < | >
    [niv] And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.
    [asv] hereby ye shall be proved: by the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.
    [jnd] By this ye shall be put to the proof: as Pharaoh lives, ye shall not go forth hence, unless your youngest brother come hither!
    [kjv] Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.

42:16 [cbgb] 须要打发你们中间一个人去,把你们的兄弟带来。至于你们,都要囚在这里,好证验你们的话涉不真,若不真,我指着法老的性命起誓,你们一定是奸细。 < | >
    [niv] Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be kept in prison, so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth. If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!"
    [asv] Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be bound, that your words may be proved, whether there be truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.
    [jnd] Send one of you, that he may fetch your brother, but ye shall be imprisoned, and your words shall be put to the proof, whether the truth is in you; and if not, as Pharaoh lives, ye are spies.
    [kjv] Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.

42:19 [cbgb] 你们如果是诚实人,可以留你们中间的一个人囚在监里,但你们可以带着粮食回去,救你们家里的饥荒。 < | >
    [niv] If you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay here in prison, while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households.
    [asv] if ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in your prison-house; but go ye, carry grain for the famine of your houses:
    [jnd] If ye are honest, let one of your brethren remain bound in the house of your prison, but go ye, carry grain for the hunger of your households;
    [kjv] If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:

    [niv] But you must bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words may be verified and that you may not die." This they proceeded to do.

42:21 [cbgb] 他们彼此说,我们在兄弟身上实在有罪。他哀求我们的时候,我们见他心里的愁苦,却不肯听,所以这场苦难临到我们身上。 < | >
    [niv] They said to one another, "Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that's why this distress has come upon us."
    [asv] And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
    [jnd] Then they said one to another, We are indeed guilty concerning our brother, whose anguish of soul we saw when he besought us, and we did not hearken; therefore this distress is come upon us.
    [kjv] And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
    [nwb] And they said one to another, We verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
    [rsv] Then they said to one another, "In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us and we would not listen; therefore is this distress come upon us."
    [web] . They said one to another, "We are most assuredly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn't listen. Therefore this distress has come on us."
    [ylt] And they say one unto another, `Verily we guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul, in his making supplication unto us, and we did not hearken: therefore hath this distress come upon us.'
    [bbe] And they said to one another, Truly, we did wrong to our brother, for we saw his grief of mind, and we did not give ear to his prayers; that is why this trouble has come on us.
42:22 [cbgb] 流便说,我岂不是对你们说过,不可伤害那孩子麽?只是你们不肯听,所以流他血的罪向我们追讨。 < | >
    [niv] Reuben replied, "Didn't I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn't listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood."
    [asv] And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore also, behold, his blood is required.
    [jnd] And Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Do not sin against the lad? But ye did not hearken; and now behold, his blood also is required.
    [kjv] And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
    [nwb] And Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Do not sin against the young man; and ye would not hear? therefore behold also his blood is required.
    [rsv] And Reuben answered them, "Did I not tell you not to sin against the lad? But you would not listen. So now there comes a reckoning for his blood."
