    [niv] Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
    [asv] Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
    [jnd] Let *us* also therefore, having so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, laying aside every weight, and sin which so easily entangles us, run with endurance the race that lies before us,
    [kjv] Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
    [nwb] Wherefore, seeing we also are encompassed with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset , and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
    [rsv] Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,
    [web] . Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
    [ylt] Therefore, we also having so great a cloud of witnesses set around us, every weight having put off, and the closely besetting sin, through endurance may we run the contest that is set before us,
    [bbe] For this reason, as we are circled by so great a cloud of witnesses, putting off every weight, and the sin into which we come so readily, let us keep on running in the way which is marked out for us,
    [niv] Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
    [asv] looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
    [jnd] looking stedfastly on Jesus the leader and completer of faith: who, in view of the joy lying before him, endured cross, having despised shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
    [kjv] Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
    [nwb] Looking to Jesus the author and finisher of faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
    [rsv] looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
    [web] looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
    [ylt] looking to the author and perfecter of faith -- Jesus, who, over-against the joy set before him -- did endure a cross, shame having despised, on the right hand also of the throne of God did sit down;
    [bbe] Having our eyes fixed on Jesus, the guide and end of our faith, who went through the pains of the cross, not caring for the shame, because of the joy which was before him, and who has now taken his place at the right hand of God's seat of power.
    [niv] Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
    [asv] For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against himself, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls.
    [jnd] For consider well him who endured so great contradiction from sinners against himself, that ye be not weary, fainting in your minds.
    [kjv] For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
    [nwb] For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
    [rsv] Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
    [web] For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don't grow weary, fainting in your souls.
    [ylt] for consider again him who endured such gainsaying from the sinners to himself, that ye may not be wearied in your souls -- being faint.
    [bbe] Give thought to him who has undergone so much of the hate of sinners against himself, so that you may not be tired and feeble of purpose.
    [niv] In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
    [asv] Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin:
    [jnd] Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, wrestling against sin.
    [kjv] Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
    [nwb] Ye have not yet resisted to blood, striving against sin.
    [rsv] In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
    [web] You have not yet resisted to blood, striving against sin;
    [ylt] Not yet unto blood did ye resist -- with the sin striving;
    [bbe] Till now you have not given your blood in your fight against sin:
    [niv] And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
    [asv] and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons,  My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord,  Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;
    [jnd] And ye have quite forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: My son, despise not chastening of Lord, nor faint reproved by him;
    [kjv] And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
    [nwb] And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh to you as to children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked by him:
    [rsv] And have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? --"My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him.
    [web] and you have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with sons,"My son, don't take lightly the chastening of the Lord,Nor faint when you are reproved by him;
    [ylt] and ye have forgotten the exhortation that doth speak fully with you as with sons, `My son, be not despising chastening of the Lord, nor be faint, being reproved by Him,
    [bbe] And you have not kept in mind the word which says to you as to sons, My son, do not make little of the Lord's punishment, and do not give up hope when you are judged by him;
    [niv] because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."
    [asv] For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth,  And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
    [jnd] for whom Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives.
    [kjv] For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
    [nwb] For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
    [rsv] For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives."
    [web] . For whom the Lord loves, he chastens,And scourges every son whom he receives."
    [ylt] for whom the Lord doth love He doth chasten, and He scourgeth every son whom He receiveth;'
    [bbe] For the Lord sends punishment on his loved ones; everyone whom he takes as his son has experience of his rod.
    [niv] Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?
    [asv] It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father chasteneth not?
    [jnd] Ye endure for chastening, God conducts himself towards you as towards sons; for who is the son that the father chastens not?
    [kjv] If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
    [nwb] If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons: for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
    [rsv] It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
    [web] . It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with sons, for what son is there whom his father doesn't discipline?
    [ylt] if chastening ye endure, as to sons God beareth Himself to you, for who is a son whom a father doth not chasten?
    [bbe] It is for your training that you undergo these things; God is acting to you as a father does to his sons; for what son does not have punishment from his father?
    [niv] If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.
    [asv] But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
    [jnd] But if ye are without chastening, of which all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
    [kjv] But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
    [nwb] But if ye are without chastisement, of which all are partakers, then are ye bastards and not sons.
    [rsv] If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
    [web] But if you are without discipline, whereof all have been made partakers, then are you illegitimate, and not sons.
    [ylt] and if ye are apart from chastening, of which all have become partakers, then bastards are ye, and not sons.
    [bbe] But if you have not that punishment of which we all have our part, then you are not true sons, but children of shame.
    [niv] Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!
    [asv] Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
    [jnd] Moreover we have had the fathers of our flesh as chasteners, and we reverenced ; shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?
    [kjv] Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
    [nwb] Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected , and we gave reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?
    [rsv] Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?
    [web] Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?
    [ylt] Then, indeed, fathers of our flesh we have had, chastising , and we were reverencing ; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of the spirits, and live?
    [bbe] And again, if the fathers of our flesh gave us punishment and had our respect, how much more will we be under the authority of the Father of spirits, and have life?
    [niv] Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.
    [asv] For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.
    [jnd] For they indeed chastened for a few days, as seemed good to them; but he for profit, in order to the partaking of his holiness.
    [kjv] For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
    [nwb] For they verily for a few days chastened after their own pleasure; but he for profit, that might be partakers of his holiness.
    [rsv] For they disciplined us for a short time at their pleasure, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.
    [web] For they indeed, for a few days, punished us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.
    [ylt] for they, indeed, for a few days, according to what seemed good to them, were chastening, but He for profit, to be partakers of His separation;
    [bbe] For they truly gave us punishment for a short time, as it seemed good to them; but he does it for our profit, so that we may become holy as he is.
    [niv] No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
    [asv] All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, even the fruit of righteousness.
    [jnd] But no chastening at the time seems to be of joy, but of grief; but afterwards yields peaceful fruit of righteousness to those exercised by it.
    [kjv] Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
    [nwb] Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness to them who are exercised by it.
    [rsv] For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant; later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
    [web] All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.
    [ylt] and all chastening for the present, indeed, doth not seem to be of joy, but of sorrow, yet afterward the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those exercised through it -- it doth yield.
    [bbe] At the time all punishment seems to be pain and not joy: but after, those who have been trained by it get from it the peace-giving fruit of righteousness.
    [niv] Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.
    [asv] Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees;
    [jnd] Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the failing knees;
    [kjv] Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
    [nwb] Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
    [rsv] Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees,
    [web] Therefore, lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees,
    [ylt] Wherefore, the hanging-down hands and the loosened knees set ye up;
    [bbe] For this cause let the hands which are hanging down be lifted up, and let the feeble knees be made strong,
    [niv] "Make level paths for your feet," so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
    [asv] and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned out of the way, but rather be healed.
    [jnd] and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned aside; but that rather it may be healed.
    [kjv] And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
    [nwb] And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
    [rsv] and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.
    [web] and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
    [ylt] and straight paths make for your feet, that that which is lame may not be turned aside, but rather be healed;
    [bbe] And make straight roads for your feet, so that the feeble may not be turned out of the way, but may be made strong.
    [niv] Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
    [asv] Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:
    [jnd] Pursue peace with all, and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord:
    [kjv] Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
    [nwb] Follow peace with all , and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
    [rsv] Strive for peace with all men, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
    [web] Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord,
    [ylt] peace pursue with all, and the separation, apart from which no one shall see the Lord,
    [bbe] Let your desire be for peace with all men, and to be made holy, without which no man may see the Lord;
    [niv] See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
    [asv] looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled;
    [jnd] watching lest any one who lacks the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble , and many be defiled by it;
    [kjv] Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
    [nwb] Looking diligently, lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up, trouble , and by it many be defiled;
    [rsv] See to it that no one fail to obtain the grace of God; that no "root of bitterness" spring up and cause trouble, and by it the many become defiled;
    [web] looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled;
    [ylt] looking diligently over lest any one be failing of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up may give trouble, and through this many may be defiled;
    [bbe] Looking with care to see that no man among you in his behaviour comes short of the grace of God; for fear that some bitter root may come up to be a trouble to you, and that some of you may be made unclean by it;
    [niv] See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.
    [asv] lest there be any fornication, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his own birthright.
    [jnd] lest any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one meal sold his birthright;
    [kjv] Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
    [nwb] Lest there any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birth-right.
    [rsv] that no one be immoral or irreligious like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.
    [web] lest there be any sexually immoral person, or profane person, as Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal.
    [ylt] lest any one be a fornicator, or a profane person, as Esau, who in exchange for one morsel of food did sell his birthright,
    [bbe] And that there may not be any evil liver, or any man without respect for God, like Esau, who let his birthright go for a plate of food.
    [niv] Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. He could bring about no change of mind, though he sought the blessing with tears.
    [asv] For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place for a change of mind in his father, though he sought is diligently with tears.
    [jnd] for ye know that also afterwards, desiring to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, (for he found no place for repentance) although he sought it earnestly with tears.
    [kjv] For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
    [nwb] For ye know that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
    [rsv] For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.
    [web] For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears.
    [ylt] for ye know that also afterwards, wishing to inherit the blessing, he was disapproved of, for a place of reformation he found not, though with tears having sought it.
    [bbe] For you have knowledge that even long after, when he was desiring the blessing for his heritage, he was turned away, though he made his request frequently and with weeping; because the past might not be changed.
    [niv] You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm;
    [asv] For ye are not come unto a mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
    [jnd] For ye have not come to that might be touched and was all on fire, and to obscurity, and darkness, and tempest,
    [kjv] For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
    [nwb] For ye are not come to the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor to blackness, and to darkness, and tempest,
    [rsv] For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest,
    [web] For you have not come to a mountain that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and to blackness, darkness, tempest,
    [ylt] For ye came not near to the mount touched and scorched with fire, and to blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
    [bbe] You have not come to a mountain which may be touched, and is burning with fire, and to a black cloud, and a dark smoke, and a violent wind,
    [niv] to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them,
    [asv] and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them;
    [jnd] and trumpet's sound, and voice of words; which they that heard, excusing themselves, declined word being addressed to them any more:
    [kjv] And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
    [nwb] And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which they that heard, entreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
    [rsv] and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers entreat that no further messages be spoken to them.
    [web] the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which those who heard it begged that not one more word should be spoken to them,
    [ylt] and a sound of a trumpet, and a voice of sayings, which those having heard did entreat that a word might not be added to them,
    [bbe] And to the sound of a horn, and the voice of words, the hearers of which made request that not a word more might be said to them:
    [niv] because they could not bear what was commanded: "If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned."
    [asv] for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;
    [jnd] (for they were not able to bear what was enjoined: And if a beast should touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;
    [kjv] (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
    [nwb] (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
    [rsv] For they could not endure the order that was given, "If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned."
    [web] for they could not stand that which was enjoined, "If even a animal touch the mountain, it will be stoned;"
    [ylt] for they were not bearing that which is commanded, `And if a beast may touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or with an arrow shot through,'
    [bbe] For the order which said, If the mountain is touched even by a beast, the beast is to be stoned, seemed hard to them;
    [niv] The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, "I am trembling with fear."
    [asv] and so fearful was the appearance, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:
    [jnd] and, so fearful was the sight, Moses said, I am exceedingly afraid and full of trembling;)
    [kjv] And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
    [nwb] And so terrible was the sight, Moses said, I exceedingly fear and tremble:)
    [rsv] Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I tremble with fear."
    [web] and so fearful was the appearance, that Moses said, "I am terrified and trembling."
    [ylt] and, (so terrible was the sight,) Moses said, `I am fearful exceedingly, and trembling.'
    [bbe] And the vision was so overpowering that even Moses said, I am shaking and full of fear.
    [niv] But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,
