    [niv] Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,
    [asv] Wherefore leaving the doctrine of the first principles of Christ, let us press on unto perfection; not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
    [jnd] Wherefore, leaving the word of the beginning of the Christ, let us go on to full growth, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and faith in God,
    [kjv] Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
    [nwb] Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on to perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith towards God,
    [rsv] Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
    [web] . Therefore leaving the doctrine of the first principles of Christ, let us press on to perfection -- not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, of faith toward God,
    [ylt] Wherefore, having left the word of the beginning of the Christ, unto the perfection we may advance, not again a foundation laying of reformation from dead works, and of faith on God,
    [bbe] For this reason let us go on from the first things about Christ to full growth; not building again that on which it is based, that is, the turning of the heart from dead works, and faith in God,
    [niv] instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
    [asv] of the teaching of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
    [jnd] of doctrine of washings, and of imposition of hands, and of resurrection of dead, and of eternal judgment;
    [kjv] Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
    [nwb] Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
    [rsv] with instruction about ablutions, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
    [web] of the teaching of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
    [ylt] of the teaching of baptisms, of laying on also of hands, of rising again also of the dead, and of judgment age-during,
    [bbe] The teaching of baptisms, and of the putting on of hands, and of the future life of the dead, and of the judging on the last day.
    [niv] And God permitting, we will do so.
    [asv] And this will we do, if God permit.
    [jnd] and this will we do if God permit.
    [kjv] And this will we do, if God permit.
    [nwb] And this will we do, if God permit.
    [rsv] And this we will do if God permits.
    [web] This will we do, if God permits.
    [ylt] and this we will do, if God may permit,
    [bbe] Now we will do this, if God lets us.
    [niv] It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,
    [asv] For as touching those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
    [jnd] For it is impossible to renew again to repentance those once enlightened, and who have tasted of the heavenly gift, and have been made partakers of Holy Spirit,
    [kjv] For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
    [nwb] For impossible for those who have been once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit.
    [rsv] For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit,
    [web] For concerning those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
    [ylt] for impossible for those once enlightened, having tasted also of the heavenly gift, and partakers having became of the Holy Spirit,
    [bbe] As for those who at one time saw the light, tasting the good things from heaven, and having their part in the Holy Spirit,
    [niv] who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age,
    [asv] and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come,
    [jnd] and have tasted the good word of God, and works of power of age to come,
    [kjv] And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
    [nwb] And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
    [rsv] and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come,
    [web] and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come,
    [ylt] and did taste the good saying of God, the powers also of the coming age,
    [bbe] With knowledge of the good word of God, and of the powers of the coming time,
    [niv] if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.
    [asv] and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
    [jnd] and have fallen away, crucifying for themselves the Son of God, and making a show of .
    [kjv] If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
    [nwb] If they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put to an open shame.
    [rsv] if they then commit apostasy, since they crucify the Son of God on their own account and hold him up to contempt.
    [web] and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify the Son of God for themselves again, and put him to open shame.
    [ylt] and having fallen away, again to renew to reformation, having crucified again to themselves the Son of God, and exposed to public shame.
    [bbe] And then let themselves be turned away, it is not possible for their hearts to be made new a second time; because they themselves put the Son of God on the cross again, openly shaming him.
    [niv] Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God.
    [asv] For the land which hath drunk the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receiveth blessing from God:
    [jnd] For ground which drinks the rain which comes often upon it, and produces useful herbs for those for whose sakes also it is tilled, partakes of blessing from God;
    [kjv] For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
    [nwb] For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh often upon it, and bringeth forth herbs fit for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
    [rsv] For land which has drunk the rain that often falls upon it, and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.
    [web] For the land which has drunk the rain that comes often on it, and brings forth a crop suitable for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receives blessing from God;
    [ylt] For earth, that is drinking in the rain many times coming upon it, and is bringing forth herbs fit for those because of whom also it is dressed, doth partake of blessing from God,
    [bbe] For a land, drinking in the frequent rain and producing good plants for those for whom it is worked, has a blessing from God:
    [niv] But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
    [asv] but if it beareth thorns and thistles, it is rejected and nigh unto a curse; whose end is to be burned.
    [jnd] but bringing forth thorns and briars, it is found worthless and nigh to a curse, whose end to be burned.
    [kjv] But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
    [nwb] But that which beareth thorns and briers rejected, and nigh to cursing; whose end to be burned.
    [rsv] But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed; its end is to be burned.
    [web] but if it bears thorns and thistles, it is rejected and near a curse, whose end is to be burned.
    [ylt] and that which is bearing thorns and briers disapproved of, and nigh to cursing, whose end for burning;
    [bbe] But if it sends up thorns and evil plants, it is of no use and is ready to be cursed; its only end is to be burned.
    [niv] Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case--things that accompany salvation.
    [asv] But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak:
    [jnd] But we are persuaded concerning you, beloved, better things, and connected with salvation, even if we speak thus.
    [kjv] But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.
    [nwb] But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.
    [rsv] Though we speak thus, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things that belong to salvation.
    [web] . But, beloved, we are persuaded of better things for you, and things that accompany salvation, though we speak like this,
    [ylt] and we are persuaded, concerning you, beloved, the things that are better, and accompanying salvation, though even thus we speak,
    [bbe] But, my loved ones, though we say this, we are certain that you have better things in you, things which go with salvation;
    [niv] God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
    [asv] for God is not unrighteous to forget your work and the love which ye showed toward his name, in that ye ministered unto the saints, and still do minister.
    [jnd] For God not unrighteous to forget your work, and the love which ye have shewn to his name, having ministered to the saints, and ministering.
    [kjv] For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
    [nwb] For God not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which ye have shown towards his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
    [rsv] For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the love which you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do.
    [web] for God is not unrighteous, so as to forget your work and the labor of love which you showed toward his name, in that you served to the saints, and still do serve them.
    [ylt] for God is not unrighteous to forget your work, and the labour of the love, that ye shewed to His name, having ministered to the saints and ministering;
    [bbe] For God is true, and will not put away from him the memory of your work and of your love for his name, in the help which you gave and still give to the saints.
    [niv] We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.
    [asv] And we desire that each one of you may show the same diligence unto the fulness of hope even to the end:
    [jnd] But we desire earnestly that each one of you shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end;
    [kjv] And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
    [nwb] And we desire every one of you to show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope to the end:
    [rsv] And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness in realizing the full assurance of hope until the end,
    [web] We desire that each one of you may show the same diligence to the fullness of hope even to the end,
    [ylt] and we desire each one of you the same diligence to shew, unto the full assurance of the hope unto the end,
    [bbe] And it is our desire that you may all keep the same high purpose in certain hope to the end:
    [niv] We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
    [asv] that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
    [jnd] that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience have been inheritors of the promises.
    [kjv] That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
    [nwb] That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
    [rsv] so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
    [web] that you won't be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherited the promises.
    [ylt] that ye may not become slothful, but followers of those who through faith and patient endurance are inheriting the promises.
    [bbe] So that you may not be slow in heart, but may take as your example those to whom God has given their heritage, because of their faith and their long waiting.
    [niv] When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,
    [asv] For when God made promise to Abraham, since he could swear by none greater, he sware by himself,
    [jnd] For God, having promised to Abraham, since he had no greater to swear by, swore by himself,
    [kjv] For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,
    [nwb] For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he swore by himself,
    [rsv] For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself,
    [web] For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he could swear by none greater, he swore by himself,
    [ylt] For to Abraham God, having made promise, seeing He was able to swear by no greater, did swear by Himself,
    [bbe] For when God made his oath to Abraham, because there was no greater oath, he made it by himself,
    [niv] saying, "I will surely bless you and give you many descendants."
    [asv] saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
    [jnd] saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee;
    [kjv] Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
    [nwb] Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
    [rsv] saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you."
    [web] saying, "Most surely I will bless you, and I will surely multiply you."
    [ylt] saying, `Blessing indeed I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee;'
    [bbe] Saying, Be certain that I will give you my blessing, and make your numbers very great.
    [niv] And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
    [asv] And thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
    [jnd] and thus, having had long patience, he got the promise.
    [kjv] And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
    [nwb] And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
    [rsv] And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise.
    [web] Thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
    [ylt] and so, having patiently endured, he did obtain the promise;
    [bbe] And so, when he had been waiting calmly for a long time, God's word to him was put into effect.
    [niv] Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.
    [asv] For men swear by the greater: and in every dispute of theirs the oath is final for confirmation.
    [jnd] For men indeed swear by a greater, and with them the oath is a term to all dispute, as making matters sure.
    [kjv] For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
    [nwb] For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation to them an end of all contradiction.
    [rsv] Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation.
    [web] For men indeed swear by a greater one, and in every dispute of theirs the oath is final for confirmation.
    [ylt] for men indeed do swear by the greater, and an end of all controversy to them for confirmation the oath,
    [bbe] For men at all times make their oaths by what is greater; and any argument is ended by the decision of the oath.
    [niv] Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.
    [asv] Wherein God, being minded to show more abundantly unto the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath;
    [jnd] Wherein God, willing to shew more abundantly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of his purpose, intervened by an oath,
    [kjv] Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
    [nwb] Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show to the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed by an oath:
    [rsv] So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath,
    [web] Wherein God, being determined to show more abundantly to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath;
    [ylt] in which God, more abundantly willing to shew to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, did interpose by an oath,
    [bbe] So that when it was God's desire to make it specially clear to those who by his word were to have the heritage, that his purpose was fixed, he made it more certain with an oath;
    [niv] God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged.
    [asv] that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us:
    [jnd] that by two unchangeable things, in which impossible that God should lie, we might have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before us,
    [kjv] That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
    [nwb] That by two immutable things, in which impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
    [rsv] so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.
    [web] that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to take hold of the hope set before us,
    [ylt] that through two immutable things, in which impossible for God to lie, a strong comfort we may have who did flee for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before ,
    [bbe] So that we, who have gone in flight from danger to the hope which has been put before us, may have a strong comfort in two unchanging things, in which it is not possible for God to be false;
    [niv] We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,
    [asv] which we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and stedfast and entering into that which is within the veil;
    [jnd] which we have as anchor of the soul, both secure and firm, and entering into that within the veil,
    [kjv] Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
    [nwb] Which we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the vail;
    [rsv] We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain,
    [web] which we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil;
    [ylt] which we have, as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and entering into that within the vail,
    [bbe] And this hope is like a strong band for our souls, fixed and certain, and going in to that which is inside the veil;
    [niv] where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
    [asv] whither as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
    [jnd] where Jesus is entered as forerunner for us, become for ever a high priest according to the order of Melchisedec.
    [kjv] Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
    [nwb] Whither the forerunner hath for us entered, Jesus, made a high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
    [rsv] where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchiz'edek.
    [web] where as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
    [ylt] whither a forerunner for us did enter -- Jesus, after the order of Melchisedek chief priest having become -- to the age.
    [bbe] Where Jesus has gone before us, as a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek..
